A day in the life of a dietetic intern: WIAW 24

In honor of the last What I Ate Wednesday of National Nutrition Month (have I been the worst nutrition blogger for nutrition month or what?!), I wanted to share a better glimpse into the day in the life of a dietetic intern! I shared some insight throughout my food service rotation, but for the last week and a half I’ve had a new beast to slay…clinical rotations!

So here ya go…

630: Wake up…I HATE to be rushed in the morning so I leave an extra 30 minutes every morning as what I like to call “cushion time.” I sip my coffee (sitting), review notes and get organized for the day.

7-730: Workout! I’ve been finding it harder to workout after work when I don’t get out til 6pm, so a few days a week I’ll do a quick Tracy Anderson muscular structure workout in the morning…and rehydrate with coffee!

730-830: Shower, get ready for work, eat breakfast, answer emails, some blog stuff, leave for work.

This morning it was a combo of my usual overnight oats with a new lemon blueberry chia pudding I’ve been experimenting with…and allllll the fixings (pictured above).

I take the subway to work most mornings, so depending on the schedule it takes about 30 minutes. With a great view of the Chrysler building and the Empire State Building on the way!

9-930: Get to work, screen patients for who I may need to see, check work email.

930-130: Meet with my preceptor, get my patient assignments, review charts, maybe attend interdisciplinary rounds, and see my patients. It flyyyyys by!

I’m not allowed to have water on the floors, so I try to sneak a few sips from the patient pantry and carry my bottle in my white coat pocket.

I know I look ridiculous, but when I’m under hydrated I totally feel it!

130-2: Lunch! The cafeteria at my hospital is insane (and the recipes/menu were created by Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality, so the food is actually pretty good…plus I get money towards the caf everyday, so it only makes sense to use it!

My go-to lately has been salad and salmon. I tend to eat 3 bigger meals these days (even though I hate that) bc I’m so busy at work. And clearly I was too starving to wait to take the picture and then I nearly forgot (so sorry for the less than pleasing pic this week!)

I take lunch time to shove food in my face, go through emails and re-group. My mind moves a million miles a minute on be floors with patients so I like the 30 minutes to shut off my brain and focus on mah food…or Instagram

2-430: Write notes. Not too exciting, but still figuring it out, which makes it fun!

430-530: Review notes with my preceptor. As an intern, all of my notes must be co-signed to make sure I’m making a proper nutrition plan, diagnosis and goals. So this is the time to learn!

And then the second I leave the floors I eat a snack…

530-6: Walk home! I’m only a 30 minute walk from work, so instead of taking the subway, I walk home when it’s not freezing or raining. It’s a great way to get in some extra activity, catch up with friends or my mom and unwind.

6-630: Shower (again…yes hospital germs skeeve me!) and start cooking dinner…usually with another snack!  (And I really should set the proper time on my coffee maker!)

My other half doesn’t get home til 730-8 and most days I try to wait for him for dinner, but it doesn’t always work!

Tonight we ate together…a take on my quinoa & lentil power bowl…his with a couple of fried eggs.

7-9/10: (sometimes straight through until bedtime): Grad school work = #gradschoolproblems. This week I have a “Journal Club” presentation on Thursday so I finished up my PowerPoint and made my notes (and practiced in the mirror!). Other times I just veg on the couch (although lately that’s been rare!)…usually with a sweet treat…like grapes and dark chocolate…

10-11: Reading & bedtime! I do NOT do well on no sleep, so it’s off to bed for me to press repeat tomorrow!

Tell me: Do you have a typical day in the life post I should see?! Leave me the link in the comments below!
