You know when you try a unique dish and proceed to think about it for days… then weeks… then MONTHS after you ate it. Perhaps you were traveling and tried something unique. Or maybe it was a fun twist that you never would have thought of.
Well, that’s how I felt the first time I tried grilled lettuce. Specifically, grilled romaine lettuce.
I’ve been thinking about this salad for over a YEAR now! It’s about time I’ve executed!
You’ve gotta try these Grilled Romaine Hearts and Figs…
I first tasted the deliciously wilted leafy green salad at a restaurant. I loved the smokiness, the softening (as weird as that sounds) of usually crisp lettuce, and the saltiness. Restaurants definitely know how to salt their food!
Then, on a trip to Philadelphia, I ate not only grilled romaine hearts, but smoky, salty grilled romaine with figs.
Fresh figs have such a short season (June through September), so it was a treat to enjoy them in the first place. But the sweetness of this summer fruit worked PERFECTLY with the smokiness of grilled lettuce. I don’t think there’s another fruit that would have worked so perfectly and held up in this dish.
So I finally set out to recreate this amazing dish I ate…
And mmm mmm mmm (I guess I’m speechless!), it was just as good!!!
I added some goat cheese on top – just imagine the melty creaminess…. ahh I’m salivating as I type!

This salad is smoky, with hints of sweetness, and a tang. Your summer won’t be complete without it!
Here’s how to make this grilled salad…
Gently brush romaine hearts with olive oil, plus a sprinkle of sea salt. Simply grill over medium-high heat.

Top with seasonal figs, then crumble goat cheese on top.

Grilled Romaine Hearts and Figs
Ingredients
3 hearts of romaine lettuce, halved lengthwise
Olive oil (for brushing)
6 black figs, halved lengthwise
1 ounce goat cheese (or another soft cheese of choice)
Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Cut romaine hearts lengthwise. Brush both sides with olive oil.
- Heat grill or grill pan to medium-high heat. Place romaine hearts cut side down on a dry grill for three minutes, then flip. Grill until leaves are charred and begin to wilt. Romaine hearts should be tender, but maintain their shape when done.
- Prepare a grill pan with nonstick spray. Over medium-high heat place figs cut side down for one minute. Flip for 30 seconds and remove from heat.
- Once cool enough to handle, halve again and sprinkle over romaine hearts. Crumble goat cheese on top and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar, if desired.
- Enjoy!
