Your Back-On-Track Recharge Tips Delivered!

Has the unofficial end of summer got you down?summer days

Or is it that bloated feeling you have from overindulging this past weekend?

While summer weekends scream sun, adventure, travel, and relaxation, overeating and drinking are (unfortunately) common occurrences. Whether you travelled to explore a new place or treated yourself to a staycation in your backyard, spending time with good friends, good food, and great fun is the best part of summer!

So if your Labor Day weekend or summer vacation left you feeling puffy, lethargic, and tired from too many cocktails and a  lack of sleep, get ready to push the reset button, stat!

Remember though: one unhealthy meal or skipping the gym once in a while will not make you overweight, unhealthy, or a bad person. I don’t think anyone’s diet should be super strict, void of wiggle room. After all, a diet should  be what you’re eating, not a plan you are following! Is it better to choose one vice: alcohol vs. dessert vs. bread basket when out? Yes, but that’s not always reality when we’re on vacation. To bounce back to your lighter self, it’s important to plan ahead so the week you return isn’t stalled by an incredible trip.

Use these tips this week to recharge your batteries and keep them in mind before your next vacation:

1. Set yourself up for success before you leave. If you return home late and anxiously start to think about work the next morning, you probably won’t want to head to the supermarket and then cook a healthy dinner. Keep this in mind before you leave. Have vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein stocked in your fridge ready for your return (if it’s only a weekend away).

image2. Know your go-to detox meal. Notice that I didn’t say juice or drink! Starvation is never a good option, and juice cleanses just don’t do it for me! Your body (liver/kidneys/intestines) naturally cleanse and detox your system, but it’s a good idea to eat extra clean after returning from an indulgent vacay…but not by completely restricting calories! Knowing what you want to fuel your body with upon your return is key. After a weekend away I always make my quinoa salad chock full of water-licious veggies for dinner and then wake up to a green smoothie the next morning. Nothing works faster to put your mindset back in the right lane than veggies!

3. Drink more! Sorry, I don’t mean alcohol, but have your water bottle glued to your hand instead. Increasing the amount of H2O you drink will not only fill you up, but will flush away your hangover. Try starting your morning with hot water and lemon, or even a shot of apple cider vinegar (I swear by it!).

4. Hit the gym. This one’s obvious, but worth pointing out. The longer you wait to lace up your sneakers, the harder it will be to get moving. Try going for a leisurely walk or taking a gentle yoga class if you don’t feel up to a vigorous sweat session. Any movement counts as exercise, so try to get your heart rate up while on vacation, but even walking to work when you return can make you feel better.

5. Snack on fruit. Fruit is sweet, but often low-cal, so you won’t feel deprived. It’s also chock full of vital vitamins, minerals, and fiber your body needs to stay healthy, hydrated, and full. The week after a crazy weekend, I always use fruit, especially watermelon and berries, as my go-to in-between meal fix.

6. Be on portion patrol. Eat too much over the weekend? Pay extra attention to your portion sizes the following week, but you don’t need to completely deprive yourself either. Make sure your meals are well-balanced with a combination of vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains, but in reasonable quantities.

So the next time you have a crazy weekend, use these tips to get back on track after overindulging. I definitely notice a difference when I treat my body properly by feeding it good-for-me veggies, fruits, whole grains, and protein, to a happy state of full, and get enough sleep- my head feels clearer, my skin glows, and I’m full of energy! I’ve always been a planner, and that goes for my health and diet too. I like to be prepared for the times when I go overboard and have a back-in-action plan to kickstart my week off on the right foot…you should try it sometime too!
